    Nanoantennas Design for THz Communication: Material Selection and Performance Enhancement

    In the development of terahertz (THz) communication systems, the nanoantenna is the most significant component. Especially, the focus is to design highly directive antennas, because it enhances the performance of the overall system by compensating the large path loss at THz and thus improves the signal-to-noise ratio. This paper presents suitable material for nanoantenna design and the advancement in their performance for THz communications. Copper, Graphene, and carbon nanotube materials are used as promising candidates for nanoantenna design. The performance of nanoantennas is carried out by analyzing the properties and behavior of the material at THz. Results show that the Graphene nanoantenna provides better performance in terms of miniaturization, directivity, and radiation efficiency. Further, the performance enhancement of the nanoantenna at THz is studied by dynamically adjusting the surface conductivity via the chemical potential of Graphene using the electric field effect. The performance of the nanoantenna is enhanced in terms of high miniaturization, high directivity, low reflection, frequency reconfiguration, and stable impedance. The THz nanoantennas using Graphene have the potential to be used for THz communication systems. In view of the smart THz wireless environment; this paper finally presents a THz Hypersurface using Graphene meta-atoms. The user-side Graphene nanoantennas and environment-side Graphene Hypersurface can build a promising smart THz wireless environment

    Individuals with obesity and COVID-19: A global perspective on the epidemiology and biological relationships

    The linkage of individuals with obesity and COVID-19 is controversial and lacks systematic reviews. After a systematic search of the Chinese and English language literature on COVID-19, 75 studies were used to conduct a series of meta-analyses on the relationship of individuals with obesity–COVID-19 over the full spectrum from risk to mortality. A systematic review of the mechanistic pathways for COVID-19 and individuals with obesity is presented. Pooled analysis show individuals with obesity were more at risk for COVID-19 positive, >46.0% higher (OR = 1.46; 95% CI, 1.30–1.65; p < 0.0001); for hospitalization, 113% higher (OR = 2.13; 95% CI, 1.74–2.60; p < 0.0001); for ICU admission, 74% higher (OR = 1.74; 95% CI, 1.46–2.08); and for mortality, 48% increase in deaths (OR = 1.48; 95% CI, 1.22–1.80; p < 0.001). Mechanistic pathways for individuals with obesity are presented in depth for factors linked with COVID-19 risk, severity and their potential for diminished therapeutic and prophylactic treatments among these individuals. Individuals with obesity are linked with large significant increases in morbidity and mortality from COVID-19. There are many mechanisms that jointly explain this impact. A major concern is that vaccines will be less effective for the individuals with obesity

    Histopathological alterations in Senegal sole, Solea Senegalensis, from a polluted Huelva estuary (SW, Spain)

    As a component of a large research project to evaluate the effects of contaminants on fish health in the field, histopathological studies have been conducted to help establish causal relationship between pollutants (heavy metals and aromatic polycyclic hydrocarbons—PAHs) and histopathological responses in Senegal sole, Solea senegalensis, from an estuary of SW Spain. Heavy metals (As, Zn, Cd, Pb, Cu and Fe) and 16 PAHs (proprietary USEPA) concentrations in water, sediment and tissues (liver and gills) and histopathological alterations in S. senegalensis from three sampling sites of Ria de Huelva estuary during 2004–2006 years have been analysed. The histopathological studies revealed seasonal and spatial differences in the lesion grade of alterations observing the highest lesion grades in fish from Odiel River and autumn season. No significant differences were observed in the alterations prevalence between sampling sites, but significant differences were observed between seasons observing the highest prevalence in autumn season. However, calculated IPAT demonstrated a low–moderate impact of pollutants on health fish. Correlations between histopathological alterations and pollutants analysed were observed being heavy metals the group that presented a major number of correlations with alterations in several organs of S. senegalensis. In evaluating the general health of fish, the use of histopathological studies in recommended for making more reliable assessment of biochemical responses in fish exposed to a variety of environmental stressors. Statistical analysis using semiquantitative data on pathological lesions can help to establish correlation between cause (stressor) and effect (biomarker)

    Os efeitos histopatolĂłgicos do cĂĄdmio nas brĂąnquias de tilĂĄpia Oreochromis niloticus foram estudados por microscopia Ăłptica, usando 25mgl-1 de CdCl2 durante quatro dias, com o objetivo de identificar seus efeitos agudos na estrutura das brĂąnquias. A morfologia geral das brĂąnquias de O. niloticus Ă© idĂȘntica Ă  de outros teleĂłsteos, apresentando quatro pares de arcos branquiais com filamentos bem desenvolvidos. Situadas lateralmente, encontram-se as lamelas provenientes do eixo central dos filamentos. No epitĂ©lio filamentar foi possĂ­vel identificar cĂ©lulas de cloro, pavimentosas e mucosas. Os peixes expostos ao cĂĄdmio mostraram sinais de lesĂ”es epiteliais; edema intersticial, vasodilatação das lamelas, destacamento do epitĂ©lio lamelar e proliferação do epitĂ©lio filamentar. As alteraçÔes observadas tambĂ©m incluĂ­ram fusĂŁo nas lamelas como resultado de hiperplasia e hipertrofia epitelial, ruptura do sistema de cĂ©lulas pilar, aneurismas e necroses.<br>The histopathogical effects of cadmium on the gills of tilapia Oreochromis niloticus were studied by light microscopy, using 25mgl-1 of CdCl2 during four days to identified the effects of short-term exposure on gills structure. The general morphology of O. niloticus gills is similar to the other teleostean fishes, showing four pairs of gills arches with well developed filaments. Bilaterally situated, secondary lamellae branches are found from the central axis of the filaments. The filamentar epithelium showed the chloride cells, the pavement cells and mucous cells. Fish exposed to cadmium showed signs of epithelial lesion, namely the interstitial edema, swollen of the lamellae, lifting and cellular proliferation of the filamentar epithelium. The changes of the gills also included lamellar fusion as a result of epithelial hyperplasia and hypertrophy, the breakdown of pillar cell system, and aneurisms with some ruptures and necrosis, especially in the filamentar epithelium
